• Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

  • Below you will find a list of questions that that are frequently asked whenever we, here at Sheaf Marble & Granite are talking to potential customers or when providing a quotation.

Q1: What is the difference between Marble, Granite and Quartz?

Answer: Granite and Marble are a naturally sourced and mined product so all the markings and textures are completely unique.  Quartz is a man made product using crushed stone and resin. This makes Quartz much more durable and resistant to heat and staining and adds a different dimension to colours and textures thus making Quartz a very popular choice.

    Q2: What are upstands?

Answer: Upstands are a thinner piece of Granite or Quartz that run at the back of the worktops, up against your wall to avoid splashing and the need for tiles. Usually 100mm high (although we can manufacture them to any height you require) they are a great addition.

    Q3: What is a Splashback?

Answer: A splashback is a thinner piece Granite or Quartz (the same thickness as upstands) that is against the wall at the back of a cooker or hob. The height of the backsplash is generally to the height of your wall units or oven extractor.

Q4: What is the turnaround time for worktops?

Answer: In ninety percent of cases we fit your worktops within one week of templating.

Q5: What is the difference between an undermount and a drop in sink?

Answer: A drop in sink is just a standard kitchen sink with a draining board that will sit into a cut out in the work top.  An undermount sink is designed to sit beneath the worktop, the cut out is shaped and polished to suit the sink itself and draining grooves are milled into the work surface.

    Q6: Who installs the sink?

Answer: We will fix and seal your sink into position but all plumbing work must be carried  out by a qualified plumber. If you do not have a plumber of your own let us know and we will be happy to arrange that for you.
